Boat on river

Safety Notice

The river can be a very dangerous environment. While a boating license is not required to use our tinnies, kayaks, or sailboats, we strongly advise adopting a responsible attitude toward safety on the water—especially if you are not an experienced boater.

All our boats come fully equipped with the safety gear required by Roads and Maritime Services (RMS). This includes lifejackets, air horns, navigation lights, bilge pumps, and bailing equipment.

Tying up to local jetties and mooring balls is not allowed. Most public jetties allow up to 15 minutes loading and unloading. Read the notices and be careful of other boats such as ferries, wishing to stop there.

Please be aware that mobile phone reception can be poor or unavailable in some remote parts of the river.

Also note that a fishing liscence is required, and there a range of options available to keep everyone happy....Always check and adhere to current size and bag limits for each species.

LOT 2 Cafe

Cafe at Bar Point

Accessible only by boat, as there are no roads to the location. Nestled into the native bushland on the edge of the Hawkesbury River, the cafe features multiple stacked timber decks situated beneath a refurbished fishing shack.

From nearby boat ramps and marinas in Brisbane Waters, Pittwater, and the lower Hawkesbury, visitors can explore scenic river spots all the way to Spencer and Wisemans Ferry. Numerous detours along tributaries—such as Berowra Creek, Mooney Mooney, and Cottage Point—offer additional routes for discovery.

Spend a weekend relaxing, boating, fishing, or simply lazing on the jetty. For those interested in a short walk, a bush trail leads to a dam that supplies fresh water to the area.

Bar Point is steeped in history, dating back to the era when square-rigged sailing ships were the primary mode of transport, carrying produce from the region's rich farmlands.

Facilities include a small spa bath, along with a cold freshwater shower located on the lower deck. For cooking and relaxation, there is a barbecue area equipped with a small fridge, a basin with hot fresh tank water, and a table and chairs.

If the weather is OK you can sleep on the deck next to the river...don't like looking at the stars there is a 4 person marquee,

Cooking fish

Cook Your Catch

Enjoy the unique pleasure of cooking fish you've caught yourself. The waters around Bar Point Jetty are home to several popular species, primarily Flathead, Tailor, Bream, and Mulloway with prawns also commonly available for netting.

Mulloway (Argyrosomus japonicus) – The River Prize

The Ultimate Challenge: Known locally as Jewfish, the Mulloway is the most prized and elusive trophy of the river system. A powerful, deep-bodied predator, it provides an unparalleled fight, testing both gear and angler stamina.

Technique and Timing: Targeting them requires dedication. They are most commonly pursued using large live baits (such as mullet or prawns) or fresh dead baits presented on the bottom near deep holes, channels, or bridge pylons. The most productive fishing often occurs at night, during tide changes, or in periods of low light.

Reward: Success is rewarded with magnificent fillets of firm, pearlescent flesh, considered by many to be the finest eating fish in Australian waters.

Tailor (Pomatomus saltatrix)

Fight and Character: A powerful, fast-moving pelagic fish, Tailor are known for putting up a spirited fight when hooked, offering an exciting challenge for anglers.

Handling and Preparation: Exercise caution—they possess a set of very sharp teeth capable of cutting through fishing line. Immediate and proper handling is crucial. To ensure the highest quality table fare, bleed the fish as soon as it is landed.

Bream (Acanthopagrus spp.)

Behavior and Technique: These aggressive, opportunistic predators are a reliable target. They will readily take both live baits (such as worms or prawns) and a variety of lures.

Flathead (Platycephalus fuscus)

Local Names and Habitat: Affectionately known by nicknames like 'flatties,' 'frogs,' or 'lizards' due to their distinctive appearance, these masters of camouflage are bottom-dwelling ambush predators.

Pro-Tip for All Species

For the freshest flavor, keep your catch on ice in an esky (cooler) immediately after bleeding or landing. This rapidly chills the flesh, maintaining optimal texture and taste until you're ready to cook.
